2023 – What a Year It Was
It is difficult to believe that a year has passed since we launched C-Suite. And what a year 2023 turned out to be. A year that brought us no closer to peace in Ukraine but instead the outbreak of yet another major conflict in the Middle East. A year that saw the continued spread of populism and nationalism driven by fears of social change, trade, and migration. A year that had economic stress in China amid simmering U.S.-China tensions. Ominously, it was the warmest year on record, reaching 1.5°C above pre-industrial norms.
But 2023 was also the year of the commercialization of AI with its vast potential for improving life, albeit with similar potential for a range of harms. The U.S., against expert expectations, managed to cool inflation without damaging employment gains. Unions achieved remarkable wins, including record contracts for autoworkers.
At C-Suite, we tried to stay on top of it all. We wrote 37 articles, including special issues on AI, China, and the UAW labor negotiations. We were honored by guest contributions from Andrew Cainey and ChatGPT herself. Throughout, we used scenario analysis, game theory, business wargaming, and other techniques to comment on a wide range of topics, including the future of global supply chains, technology revolutions, chip wars, real wars, industrial policies, autonomous and electric vehicles. All from the perspective of C-Suite executives who must guide their organizations through times of exceptional volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.
We also made some changes. While we will continue to review 125 leading business publications, we find it impossible not to offer our own perspective and analysis as well. We added Quick Takes on current events, such as the remarkable UAW strikes – a real-time case study – and the Dutch elections. In 2024, we will also start publishing interviews with C-Suite executives and thought leaders from around the world.
Finally, we’d like to end this year with a Top Five of our articles of 2023:
1) “UAW Negotiations through a Game Theory Lens” (9/15/23)
2) “2022 – A Consequential Year” (1/25/23)
3) “Business with China: Should I Stay or Should I Go?” by Andrew Cainey (6/20/23)
4) “Scenarios for the Future of AI and Digital Transformation” (6/18/23)
5) “Market Entry Games – Lessons from Uber” (2/21/23)
